Personality
Coldblooded, rational, diplomatic and calculating. These are the most prominent characteristics of his personality. Donovan has a strange fascination with danger and death in which he actively seeks them out for the adrenaline. Unable to feel feral fear (medical condition), he actively looks for the thrill that comes along with being in dangerous situations. He is hypersensitive to everything around him. He can feel emotions of most people exceptionally well, he is always aware of his surroundings and especially of his situation. Sneaking up on him is nearly impossible unless there are supernatural powers at hand.
But not only is Donovan a threat to himself by seeking out danger - no, he is absolutely more of a threat to his environment. With no sympathy for any human left and with his obsession with death, it was only a matter of time until he would kill his first victims. For Donovan, this was rather early. He is a cruel, sadistic and bloodthirsty murderer, enjoying to see others screaming, begging, bleeding and... eventually dying. He loves the feeling of someones last breath, and the cold unfocussed stare of dead eyes. It fascinates him to a very creepy level.
All these aspects only underline that underneath lies a very disturbed, crazy personality. While fear means nothing to him, he can still very well feel everything else. And WHEN he feels, he usually he feels EXTREME. Usually he has his cool, unfazed attitude with high confidence, but other emotions can easily change his actions drastically. When he feels happy, he often feels it SO intense that he almost cant stand it, same goes for lust and passion, and of course also sadness. Yet, he is usually able to controll himself in public and especially in front of his business partners. But his enemies as well as his true love will eventually know his true nature. That said - one does not WANT Donovan to be your enemy. Donovan is as vengeful as can be. If you wrong him or break the deal, he WILL find you and he WILL hunt you down until he can feel your blood getting cold on his hands.
Towards his beloved partner Karanos, Donovan shows his more humane, soft side. Neglected as a child and almost tortured by doctors, Donovan is starving for attention and affection. Unloved, unwanted and not welcomed, that was all he ever knew. Soon, he changed his world to become the most feared man in the city, with people respecting him simply because of their fear for their lives. But Karanos, a vampire with a tragic background, was stubborn enough to actually take his time and get to know him. And what first started out as a simple business relationship, soon turned into a cautious friendship and eventually into love.
And like always, Donoven feels _extreme_ about him. His love is another obsession of his, with a strong wish to please his lover. While Donovan always seeks to be strong and invincible with his dark games, he absolutely loves the fact that Karanos is stronger than him. He is eager to fulfill his every wish and to show that his time invested in Donovan is worth it. He is absolutely mad and crazy for him - and if anyone ever decided to just lay their pinky finger on him, this someone would soon find himself in pieces, scattered around on a bloody floor.
Background Story
Donovan grew up with his parents in a big, lovely house. It all started out fine, with his parents being loving and caring, giving Donovan a mostly happy childhood. That was... until it got apparent that Donovan was... somehow different. While he was always a brave and fearless child, it never got apparent HOW fearless he was until the parents noticed Donovan coming home with new bruises every day. They soon found out that their little boy was obsessed with pain and blood, and did not hesitate at all to throw himself onto the concrete once more, or punch himself or anything else the little boy could think of. What first seemed like a weird phase continued, much to the distress of his parents who soon got little Donny into multiple therapies.
Thinking that it was maybe a response to some childhood trauma, therapists tried all kinds of things to make Donovan talk, or receptive to the therapy attempts. Medicine over medicine, pills over pills, and one session after the next, and yet nothing seemed to work. It got so far that the father of Donovan almost got into the center of a rape-suspicion, which never luckily happened however.
Young Donovan hated the therapy, and all the medicine that made him dizzy and feel weird. Yet he was too little to really reject anything he was given, resulting in Donovan getting more and more creative in hiding the pills he was supposed to take.
After years of horrible therapies, it was finally concluded that there was maybe a physical reason behind his weird behavior. After several tests and stays in hospitals, they finally found the reason: A deformation of his frontal lobe of the brain made him physically fearless. His brain was simply not able to process the information of fear, his survival instinct was non-excistent. His fascination with blood and pain was no mental illness resulting from some horrible experience, and more the result of being unable to feel fear - while the positive aspects of being filled with adrenaline still worked on him.
But even with this diagnose they were not happy, trying again and again with medicine to 'fix' him. Donovan, now about 12 years old, however never felt broken in the first place. He rather saw it as his biggest strength. While other children were blinded by fear and panic, he was able to stay rational and think about what was best to do. His instincts were not gone either - he KNEW when danger lingered around him, he simply did not freak out about it. And being told that this was a bad thing only angered him more and more, not to mention the horrible experiments they had put him through. With medicine not being quite as advanced as today, the treatment was often harsh and painful.
Donovan grew to hate doctors, therapists, hospitals and... especially his parents more and more. He felt like they rejected him. No, he KNEW they rejected him unless he pretended to be the healthy boy they wanted. Whenever he was himself, hurting himself or just thinking weird, they would freak out and pump him up with pills that made him loose control over himself. He hated it, and this hatred bottled up more and more and more over the years, until somewhen he just... bursted open. It happened when he was 16 years old.
When his father was trying to give him medicine via syringe again, like many times, Donovan just... broke. He grabbed the syringe from his fathers hand and stabbed him with it, injecting the numbing drug into him instead while his mother freaked out. Then he ran into the kitchen, grabbing a big knife and returning... to end this all.
With his parents gone and knowing that police would try to find him, he came up with plans. Unable to fear for his life, leaving his home with the bare necessities was not as hard for him as for others. He covered his tracks almost professionally, with his obession with medicine, science and murders being incredibly helpful. That night, Donovan vanished without a trace, and instead started to live a life in the shadiest parts of the town. With his calculating way of thinking, and his incredible ability to stalk people, it was easy to soon blackmail the first few people into giving him a place to stay. It all started slowly, yet Donovans intelligence and critical thinking soon allowed him to make deals with influencial people. Finding out about their horrible secrets, and then blackmailing him for his advantages. Which first was his only way to survive with his broken background soon became his job, his.. whole existence.
Within a few years, Donovan had built his own little network inside his hometown. No, it was not little at all - his web was everywhere. Police, judges, politicians, lawyers - everyone was caught up in his games. It became a true business - with Donovan making deals. Judges would rule in his favor, and in return would get the necessary safety from Donovan and his network. Policement would simply ignore anything relating to the 'red fog', with the leading officers earning a great sum for letting evidences slip through. Donovan could give them everything they wanted: Money, clients, fame and reputation, safety, or even love. And in return, they all contributed to his net of information. This city was inofficially under his control. "The man in red", or the "red fog" as the people started to call him for his famous red suits and the inability to be found, always vanishing when someone dared to try to look for him, always ungraspable. Every higher citizen was a little chesspiece in his business, and his security measures made him untouchable. He prepared everything - and if he would die, he would take this city with him, that he made sure of.
One fateful day, a new stranger came into his town. Some kind of rowdy that disturbed more and more of Donovans deals, which angered him at first. But it seemed like this man was quite capable, being able to withstand several of his 'goons' he sent to take the troublemaker out. Getting info about this man was, however, harder than anything before and instantly it triggered Donovans curiosity.
And that was... when it all began. When he met him. Karanos.
Relationships
It is important to note that no relationship except his lover has any significance for Donovan. Not even his parents have a place in his heart anymore. People are mere animals to him, little flies all caught in his dangerous web. Eventhough he is great at acting and faking friendships, he does not feel anything for anyone - except for one man.
Karanos - This strange man was the object of his interest from the moment he stumbled into his life. A strong rowdy that entered his city, stumbled into his web and started to cause destruction. Something Donovan absolutely could not tolorate in his city. But no matter how many people he sent after this troublemaker, they all wound up dead. Whoever this troublemaker was - he was talented. Not only did he seem to be very great at fighting and killing, but he almost seemed ungraspable as himself. There were basically no infos to be found on this man. And this instantly triggered Donovans curiosity.
After trying to get in contact with this man several times, he finally was able to strike a deal with him as well. Karanos - or 'Joseph Walker' as he called himself - was looking for someone who had fled into Donovans city. The deal therefore was more than simple: Donovan would help him with his search of this runaway man, while Karanos would lend his incredible sneak-abilities to get infos Donovan desired.
But things started to get weird when Donovan started to wake up in the middle of the streets, with no memory of how he got there or why he just passed out there. Each time, however, there were little evidence that ticked him off, fueling his investigations. Intelligent and attentive as Donovan was, he soon started to figure things out: That Karanos was responsible for these blackouts. That something was not quite right with this man. And the more he dug out, concerning Karanos but also the man he was looking for, the more Donovan found himself in a strange reality.
Karanos was a vampire. And THAT... made him even more fascinating. Quite obviously he was important to this vampire as well, and what was once just a simple deal became almost like a game of information. And thus, their true relationship began to rise. With Donovan being a 'blackened' - a human receptive to the curse of a vampire - Karanos absolutely wanted him to be his, to make a ghoul out of Donovan. A bloodpact unlike no other. Sadly, the man that fled from him was a vampire as well - also desiring to make Donovans his. Unvoluntarily, Donovan had become the object of obession for both these vampires who fought over him. They could not force him to become a ghoul, however, as the transformation would only happen if he voluntarily agreed to it. On the one hand, Donovan suffered from being the interest of two superhuman beings, that manipulated him with bites and kisses - on the other, he was absolutely fascinated by this. Plus, as he had his deal to help Karanos finding his enemy, and this fight over him meant that his enemy would not run away again.
Eventhough he befriended Karanos more and more, while barely having contact to his enemy (which also did not make himself look favourable in the few meetings they had), he could not simply decide to become Karanos' ghoul. In case his enemy was stronger in the end and managed to kill Karanos, it would have been his deathsentence as well if he was his ghoul. Therefore, the decision was simple: He would become the ghoul of the vampire left standing in this ongoing battle. If anyone wanted to claim him, they'd have to get rid of the other vampire first.
And... that was exactly what happened. Kind of.
One fateful day, Karanos had called him to ask for help. Vampirehunters were hunting him and had managed to hurt him severely. While Donovan already rushed towards their meeting point, Karanos dragged himself there, with most of his body disintegrated. He collapsed, and Donovan only found his dead body. To.. his own surprise, he was shocked. It was the first time he ever mourned someones death, almost in disbelief that he was unable to help. And shortly after, Karnaos' enemy arrived as well, fit as a fiddle and grinning. He had won. And Donovan knew that there was no sense in denying him - either he would become his ghoul or get killed as well. The enemy managed to trick the hunters to help him killing Karanos - but also the enemy knew that disintigrating his body meant nothing if the heart was still intact. With a satisfied grin on his face, he sat down towards the 'corpse', getting ready to destroy Karanos' heart.
That was the moment Donovan realized that Karanos was not dead yet. That he would get up eventually, and be able to fight off his enemy again. So... all he had to do was to win him some time. Therefore, Donovan first tricked the vampire into letting 'him' kill Karanos, before turning on him and attacking the other vampire instead, with everything he got. From holy weapons to guns and boiling water, he fought with all his might against the supernatural creature. Yet, he was just a mere human, and therefore was unable to fend him off forever. And when he was badly wounded, it awaked something in Karanos again - who rose from the dead, only to shred his enemy into pieces for hurting Donovan.
But it was too late for the man in red, as he had lost too much blood. He only smiled at his friend that he was able to defend long enough, but his time was over. In a desperate attempt to save Donovan, Karanos fed him his blood to start the ghoul transformation - hoping that Donovan would accept his gift.
And of course he did! Ever since that moment, Donovan knew that Karanos was his one and only. He had saved Karanos' life, and he had saved his in return. The bloodpact only sealed it all. They belonged together, they were meant for each other. By surpassing humanity and becoming a ghoul, he agreed to an eternal lifetime at the side of his saviour. The only man that ever truly liked HIM for who he was. Of course it needed a dark creature of the night to love a murderer like him, but he was found eventually.
Towards Karanos, he is clingy and needy, always wanting his attention and love. When Karanos praises him, he flips out and feels as happy as can be. He loves him deeply, enjoying his evil and dominant side. For once Donovan LOVES to be dominated, yet they often make a playful game out of it. He is head over heels into him, absolutely weak for his flirting. Karanos is allowed to do anything to him. He could hurt him, even kill him, with Donovans full consent. He is absolutely obsessed with him. If it werent for the bloodbond, he would almost not believe that there was truly someone who likes the dark and twisted way he was. For this and for saving his life, Donovan will forever be thankful to him.
