Personality

Ra is sometimes hard to get through. At times he is stubborn as a mule, and at other times he is influenced by every word that is spoken. In general, Ra is a person with a strong sense for righteousness and fairness. Eventhough he often doubts himself as an Atem, his wish is to improve the kingdom to the best of his abilities. He cares deeply about his kingdom, trying to make education and art available for everyone. But his potential is greatly held down by the former Commander of the royal guard, Enzo. Enzo taught him most of what he knows about being an Atem. And while he hated the lectures Enzo gave him, it ended up giving him some kind of guideline to act after. Thanks to that, he is a very polite and correct Atem, being very wary of his manners.

While he holds onto his credo of doing no harm, he is very insecure in a lot of other crucial parts of being an Atem. The fact that he did not want to become an Atem when he was younger still haunts him - he still thinks he is unfit for this kind of job, having to be reminded by his trusted friend Ikarus that the sun has chosen him. Ikarus in general is his most important emotional pillar. Ra gets easily upset and tends to overworry a lot. And when he does, he often seeks Ikarus' opinion to help him out, almost unable to make decisions for himself. Without Ikarus, he would fall victim to Enzos influence and slowly decay to be nothing more than a handpuppet for Enzo to act through.

Background Story

Ra was born and raised in the kingdom of the Free, living only with his mother and father, two very loving parents. The neighbor family was very close to them, namely his best friend Ikarus Kyriakos and his father. Ra and Ikarus were best friends ever since they were toddlers, with Ikarus being just a few years older than Ra.

One fateful day, the former Atem, Atem Celestia, sent men of all ages into the battle against the army of Atem Harambe of the Sublime. Ras father, not being the fittest man, was safe - but Ikarus father had to go into battle, leaving his son behind. Of course, Ikarus could stay with Ras family. A few days passed, and Ras family got notified that Mr. Kyriakos had fallen in the battle. Ikarus, whose mother died after childbirth, now had noone left. Ra was too young to really understand the gravity of the situation, but he knew that Ikarus was broken. Of course, as children do, he always tried to cheer his friend up and to give him new hope despite everything going on. Ras parents decided to take Ikarus in as well, caring for him like he was their own child and mere a sibling of Ra since he was close to the family anyway. Shortly later, Atem Celestia fell after an assassin had managed to sneak past the royal guard and killed her.

A few more years passed. Ra was still very close best friends with Ikarus, who slowly - thanks to Ra - got over the loss of his father. All was fine, until one day Ra discovered his powers by accident. During school, he and the other children sang a cheerful song - only for his voice to strike for the first time, quickly hypnotizing the entire class and teacher, who just sat there all quiet and with a blank stare. Ra was terrified and notified other teachers of what happened - and thus, it got discovered that a new sunblessed was in the kingdom! Ra was only 9 years old and had not yet grasped the importance of this all and just got scared of singing eventhough he loved to do so. Luckily, with 9 years he was way too young to reign over the Atem-less kingdom, and thus he could stay with his family for a while longer. In order to not make a big deal out of it, Ra was supposed to grow up without much interference of the temple.

But soon, the kingdom of the Sublime had gotten notice about the new young sunblessed and immediately decided to act before the new Atem could take the reign. Shortly after Ras 10th birthday, assassins of the Sublime sneaked into the city and attacked the unprotected home of the young soon-to-be Atem. Ra was playing in the garden with Ikarus when huge men suddenly stormed towards them. Ra got scared, but there was not much he could do but try to run inside with Ika, who already called for him. The monkeys were too quick, however, easily catching the 10 year old to attack him with their blades, badly injuring the young boy on his chest. That would have been the end of his story if it werent for Ras father who stepped outside when he heard his boy scream, quickly running up and rescuing his boy. His mother came shortly after to pick up the badly wounded child, carrying him back into the house with Ikarus besides her, while panic broke out outside. Ra faintly remembered his mother crying and petting his head, with Ikarus holding his hand and screams of his fathers echoing until everything went black.

That night, Ras father died, together with a few other citizens that had rushed to aid the father. It did not take long until the royal guard had heard of this incident and, under the order of the Commander Enzo, Ra was taken away to the temple. Ras mother and Ikarus were not allowed to come with him, saying that they would only get into danger if they stayed with the young Ra. The loss of her husband (to the dead) and her child (to the temple), Ras mother broke that night, leaving just an empty shell that continued to function solely for the purpose of raising Ikarus, who again got left behind.

​

Once Ra woke up from the horrible wounds, his life had completely changed. The emergency situation had forced the Commander to crown Ra way earlier - and like that, the young boy got crowned to the new reigning Atem. All this terrified Ra. He was alone, he was in a foreign home that was way too big for a 10 year old boy, and he was not allowed to see his mother and 'brother'. Not to mention that of course he had to learn that his father fell in the battle. At first, Ra was full of anger. Daily tantrums and escape attempts were routine, but the guard always managed to get ahold of the boy before he could reach his family. And on the other side, Ras mother and Ikarus were denied entry to the temple as well. It took some time to tame the stubborn little boy, but in the end, the strict Commander Enzo won.

Ra broke. Somewhen he had to relialize that his situation was not going to change soon. His fighting spirit slowly began to recede until it was gone. Over time, Ra had become a puppet for the puppeter Enzo, who disguised his manipulative ways as teachings. While Ra fought him at first, he somewhen began to see him as a new caretaker - one, that never was happy with him. Who was always disappointed when he acted on his own, and pleased when he followed his rules. Enzo had almost succeeded in eradicating Ras personality.

But then, everything changed again when HE turned up.

Ikarus.

Throughout the years, Ikarus had never given up on seeing Ra again. And seeing how he was not allowed at Ras side, he had started planning. And suddenly, he stood there, as a new recruit of the royal guard! Ra could not believe his eyes and was overrun with joy and tears. Ikarus woke his personality back up and gave Ra strength to go on. In the same way, Ikarus found even more motivation to go through with the training. Eventhough the training under Enzo was hard and torturous, Ikarus underwent it without ever showing his struggles towards Ra. Years went by with Ikarus training to join the royal guard and with Enzo trying to deny it, seeing how much influence he had on Ra. But Ikarus powered through everything and in the end managed to become a new guard at the temple.

​

While Ra was absoutely proud of Ikarus, he was mainly just glad to no longer be alone. Ikarus soon became his anchor point in life. Without shame Ra promoted Ikarus further and further up through the ranks until his best friend became his personal guard and Commander of the royal guard. Eventhough many thought that Ra was simply choosing Ikarus over others, Ika had absolutely earned his spot.

From this point on, life was not that bad anymore. Ra began developing his character again, slowly growing up to become secure and proud. But together with Ikarus, Ra went through even more hardships. The death of his dear mother that he was not allowed to see, as well as many more attacks by the assassins of the Sublime.

In the end, Ra switched between fear for his life and the need to live without overworrying all the time. Always with Ikarus right there at his side, like his shadow, loyal and trustworthy.

Atem powers

While Ra had discovered his powers at an early age accidental, his powers are very weak and underdeveloped. After an incident that left a templeworker crippled, Enzo could convince Ra to not use his powers as they cause harm. At this time, all he can do is start singing to hypnotize people, and glide with a slight golden shine appearing around him.

In the course of the story, Ra sees the necessity of figuring out his powers and starts to train them. Once fully developed, the golden shine turns out to be a full set of golden wings made out of light, giving him the ability to fly. He also learns how to control his voice. He can change between talking normally and using his voice to give orders that the listener has to obey to. Important to note is that his orders do not effect everyone, but only those who feel adressed by him. Ra can also immunise people against his voice. When he sings, however, it affects everyone who hears it, unless they got immunised. That said, deaf people are not affected by Ras voice.

Atam Harambe, Ras biggest enemy, has a special ability that renders Ras powers almost useless. If Ra is insecure about himself or his orders and he hesitates, Harambes insane amount of willpower allows him to break through the effect of the voice. Only when Ra stands his ground proudly he can effectively use his voice against Harambe.

Relationships

Ikarus - Ikarus is his everything. They were best friends since they were mere toddlers, they grew up together as best friends, and after tragedy has struck Ikarus' home Ikarus got 'adopted' by Ras parents. Thanks to that, everyone has always seen those two as brothers, eventhough they share no blood. Sometimes it is a thorn in their eyes since people tend to forget that Ikarus had his own parents in the past.

He lost Ikarus after he got dragged into the temple and was not allowed to see him anymore due to the lingering danger of the Sublime attacking him. A loss that took a big toll on him emotionally, bringing him to a breaking point. Only when Ikarus re-appeared years later by applying to become a new guard of the temple, Ra found himself back. Ever since that day, Ra was inseperable from Ikarus again. It was like they never had been apart. Sure, Ikarus had grown to become a handsome and strong man, but he was still the sweetheart he always was. Together, they both managed to endure the strict and sometimes abusive Enzo who taught them both: Ra how to be a proper Atem, and Ikarus how to be a proper guard.

By now, Ikarus had become his personal life guard, as well as the leading Commander of the royal guard, and Ra could not be happier or prouder. Ikarus was, is and forever will be his driving force. Without him, he would be nothing. He is all that is left of his former life. If Ra is the Sun, then Ikarus is the warmth that allows the Sun to exist.

Later on, Ra is confronted with the fact that Ikarus has a huge crush on him. Suddenly, everything changes and he looks at Ikarus with different eyes. At first he feels guilty for never realizing it, thinking that he perhaps hurt Ikarus' feelings by being his clingy self, so he tries to step back away from him. But after another tragic event where he almost looses Ikarus, who protects him from an incoming attack from the Sublime, Ra opens his eyes and sees that there is noone better for him. "If there was only a man like Ikarus", he often thought, without ever acknowlodging Ikarus' feelings. Blinded by the 'brother'-generalization, he was oblivious to everything Ikarus tried. But after all that, Ra finally realizes that they were meant to be and soon starts crushing on him. Hard.

Enzo - Enzo is one of the antagonists of Ras story. Enzo was responsible that Ra got dragged into the temple at an early age, crowning him with just 10 years old, and teaching him the ways of being an Atem. Eventhough his reasons always seemed noble and to be in Ras best interest, Enzo acted selfish. Through Ra, he wanted to start an open war between the Free and the Sublime. Therefore, his teachings were strict and his ways often cruel. Towards everyone, but especially towards Ra and Ikarus.

And still... Enzo was all Ra had for a long time. When he was not allowed to go back to his mother and Ikarus because they could get into danger around him, Ra was scared and alone. He was just 10 years old when he got almost murdered, lost his home and family and suddenly had to reign a whole kingdom. And Enzo was the only one who could help him, who took care of him and who taught him. Whether Ra liked it or not, Enzo was something of a fatherfigure to him.

Thus, even when it turned out that Enzo had betrayed him and tried to get them killed by letting the assassins slip in, he mostly felt disappointment and sorrow instead of anger.

Atem Yaro - Ra had always looked up to Atem Yaro, and still does. He met Yaro the first time when he was 14 years old. Yaro was kind and gentle, so unlike Enzo. Their first meeting was to get to know each other since their kingdoms had a good relationship, and this meeting shaped Ras picture of Yaro a lot. To him, Yaro was this wise, all-knowing and wonderful man. Someone he could ask anything, and he would answer with a soft smile. Back then, Ra almost saw a fatherfigure in him. Luckily, they stayed good friends and have a great political as well as personal relationship. But by now, Ra has grown out of that phase, eventhough Yaro still is his role model as well as a trusted and very appreciated friend. He will forever be thankful for his friendship.

Malek & Samael - Ra was very curious about the newcomers in Yaros temple. They looked different, behaved different, dressed different... And in general, they are both very friendly and polite. For a while, he took interest in Malek especially, but that quickly changed when he became a witness to Maleks blood-powers. Not aware that Malek had powers, even less so creepy ones, it shocked Ra quite a lot. Ever since then he treats both Malek and Samael with more respect than before. Yet, their powers also already helped him and Ikarus out a lot - and in the end, they stayed good friends after all.

Rorik - Ra doesnt know Rorik well. Rorik is the leading Commander of the royal guard of the Sun and therefore has the same title as Ikarus. Yet, the definition of this job is vastly different between the kingdoms, as the Sun live in harmony and peace, while the Free have to worry over a war at any time. Ra only knows that Ikarus gets along well with him, and that is honestly all he needs to know about this grump.

Atem Harambe - Ra shudders when he thinks of him. Atem Harambe is the very reason for his misery. The power-hungry monkey wants to take over the kingdom of the Free and constantly attacks either his kingdom or Ra personally. He sends out assassins to take out Ra or Ikarus, trying to provoke the open war that they know they would win. Why Harambe has not showed up personally or sent his troups to overrun the kingdom is still a mystery to Ra. All Ra hopes for is to keep peace for as long as he can, and to survive. But with every attack, Ras defenses wear down. And when he finally breaks, Ra will have had enough. He hates Harambe with his full heart. Ra will only be able to finally rest when Harambe is dead.

Atem Azura / Atem Yuval - Ra does not know of the existence of Azuras twin brother, Yuval. The Sea have kept the kidnapping of the second Atem down, who got abducted at a young age. Therefore, Ra only knows the ruling Atem, Atem Azura. Sadly they do not have much contact as the kingdoms are far apart with mostly the kingdom of the Sublime between them. He met her once and thought she was lovely but very correct and polite. If he had only known that she hates Harambe just as much as he does....
